Learning the Continents

Today we continued to learn about the seven continents. Students understand continents as large land masses and took turns identifying continents playing an interactive website on the SMART board.

After a labelling and colouring worksheet, we explored where we live on google maps. Using google maps on the SMART board, I was able to zoom in on our location with extreme detail! This was very exciting for students, especially when I switched to the satellite view. Slowly zooming out, we could see that we live in Winnipeg, which is within Manitoba, which is within Canada, which is located in North America, with is part of our planet Earth!

Using the following manipulative, I replicated the same expansion of our location!
Then beginning with the world map on google maps, we reversed the activity and narrowed in on our location.

We noted that this activity reminded us of nesting dolls, with each location fitting within the other! It is with this activity that I hope to have students understand the relationship between our city, province, country and continent.

Students began to create their own location map, which they will finish next week!

NO SCHOOL FRIDAY! Teachers of Heritage will spent the day with Early Years teachers of the division at Buchanan School. We will explore various Digital Learning topics as part of professional development.

Monday is Earth Day! I have planned Earth Day themed activities for the entire day. Of course, as we will discuss, we need to think and care for our Earth each and everyday, but Monday will be a fun and exciting day to review why this is important and the small and big ways we can help.

Grade 3s begin swimming lessons on Tuesday. Students are to arrive Tuesday morning with their bathing suit underneath their clothes and bring their towel, underwear and hairbrush (if needed) in a separate bag. The timeline is tight on swimming mornings! We need to be on the bus for 10am, so prompt arrival at school is important. Of course, students should not bring any valuables with them to the pool. After exiting the pool, students have only 15 minutes to rinse off in the showers, dry themselves and dress before we need to be back on the bus, heading back to school. The bus driver immediately heads off to another school after dropping us off and we can not make him late. I am very excited for swimming to begin! The students always have an amazing time and it wonderful to see them in a different environment! It truly is a bonding experience :)
