Money and Mummies

Happy Hawaiian Day! This morning we participated in four money centres: The Wacky Toy Store, bingo, Stamp It Out and a money word search. The Wacky Toy store was an activity in which each toy's price was calculated by adding the value of each letter in its name (similar to our activity from Wednesday). In Stamp It Out, students were given a value and used coin stamps to represent the value. The energy level was high as everyone was very engaged in each centre! Many were too excited to even sit in their chairs!

Sadly, we said good-bye to our amazing student teacher, Miss Warkentin! It has been so great to have her each Tuesday and Thursday morning. She easily built bonds and relationships with the students and she will be greatly missed! Best wishes in your future studies Miss Warkentin!!

After lunch, we took another look at mummies! We played BBC's Mummy Maker online game and were an assistant to the chief embalmer. We applied our understanding of the sequence of mummification and took a body through the embalming process. It was a fantastic interactive learning activity. Check it out at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/egyptians/launch_gms_mummy_maker.shtml

We then watched a short video clip from the video Living History: Living in Ancient Egypt. Next we completed a SMARTboard activity in which we order the sequence of the embalming process. Lastly, we read a poem about mummies and brainstormed a list of words to put in a custom word search. TONS of fun!

Coming up Friday: Spelling Test, library and PJ day!

*Please remind students that they are to SAY and SORT their words at home. It is so important that they HEAR the sound pattern of the week, along with seeing the spelling pattern. During the spelling test, they need to be able to hear the sound pattern and apply the spelling pattern. They can then practice writing them.

How Much is Your Name Worth?

This week, we are participating in a mini-blitz about Money! Money is not in the math curriculum, but  I love to plan a short study of money because it is perfect practice of skip counting, understanding greater than and least and addition of multiple addends. Not to mention its real world application!

Today, after some interactive activities on the SMART board, we completed an activity called How Much is your Word Worth? Each letter on the alphabet was assigned a coin value. We each calculated the value of our first and last name. Each student then had to read their value aloud and we spent time ordering our values from lowest to greatest! It was quite challenging! Students had difficulty differentiating between values... dollars and then cents, but had better understanding when I compared the ordering to that of the dictionary. If three students have the same first letter, we look to their second and then third. With money, we first look at the dollar value. If it is the same, we looks to the cents. We will practice this again later this week.
Turns out Sienna has the "most valuable" name in the class and
Leland has the "least valuable" name in the class.

Hats Off to Heritage was great! Dress like a rockstar tomorrow!

THE BEST FIELD TRIP EVER!!

We just got back from the BEST field trip ever! We watched a movie at the IMAX about ancient Egypt and mummies! It was in 3-D. We had popcorn and drinks. There was a demon that looked like it was coming out of the the screen! Some of us screamed. We saw lots of hieroglyphics (picture symbols on walls and papyrus). We saw pharaohs and Gods. We saw examples: mummies, Egyptian clothing, a scribe and farmers, jewellery and temples! Our favourite parts were:

-The demon (Jake, Brianna)
-When the guy came in and they bowed for him and they were building the temple [the pharaoh Rameses visiting his temple under construction) (Owen)
-When they weighed the heart and the crocodile kind of ate it (Grace)
-When the people showed where they found the tomb of the mummies and seeing the people take all the sarcophagus  (Sienna)
-When they saw the kings and queens names written in the famous tubes [cartouches] (Ava)
-When the queen was getting all her jewellery and makeup on (Naomi)
-When we saw ancient mummy's face (Adrian)
-The popcorn! (Amber)
-When we learned that the mummies had diseases (Sienna)
-DNA is still in the bones of the ancient mummies (Sienna)
-The robbers steal [items from] the tomb (Emily)

So much fun!

While the hockey kids are away...

Right now, most of our class is away at hockey. We are here cleaning the classroom for conferences tomorrow! We won't have time to clean tomorrow because we have music, gym and library in the morning and a field trip in the afternoon. The field trip is to IMAX before it closes forever.

This morning we looked at landscape pictures from Egypt. They inspired us to make some art about the desert in Egypt. Mrs. McWillaims shared with us a story about how she rode a camel in the Sahara Desert in Africa. She saw the sunrise and said it looked like a ball of fire! She used words like, "Spectacular" and "Wonderful" to describe her adventure.

To make our art we: started with watercolours. We painted the sunrise using red, orange and yellow.

Then we cut sandpaper with wavy lines to show the sand dunes of the desert. This made our mid-ground. We swap the extra piece of sand paper with a partner who had a different shade. This wavy piece became the foreground. We then glued on a camel! Take a look:

The hockey kids will be back after recess. We will see you tomorrow night or Friday morning for conferences!! Look for our reports cards coming home today!

Work & Play In Ancient Egypt

In ancient Egypt, people worked very hard. People had the following jobs:
-Scribe (who wrote hieroglyphics on the walls and on papyrus paper)
-Craftsmen (artists who painted walls, carved statues and made jewellery and furniture)
-Farmer (who grew crops)
-Government official (who made rules)
-Draftsmen (who designed buildings)

For fun, people played with wooden balls, rich people threw dinner parties, people did acrobatics, played music, wrestled and more!

Board games were popular and we just played one! We played Seega! It looks like Tic-Tac-Toe. It was AWESOME! Now we each have our own game in our Egyptian suitcases!

Here we are playing Seega:
