Receipt Tape Number Lines

Team 24 Families,

Here is something that we were working on before Spring Break. We used receipt tape to create number lines and to help students further develop their understanding of number and place value.

We started this activity with a buddy. It was great to have some of the grade 3s take on leadership roles. Buddies marked '0' and '100' on their number line and the halfway mark, 50. Working together, buddies added the multiples of ten to the number line (evening them out visually was a challenge they quickly tackled). Then for the FUN! Using amazing place value dice, partners took turns rolling a ten dice and a ones dice to create a 2-digit number. After rolling a number, this student had to record their number on the line, with their buddy checking their work.

After working with their number line and their buddy again, students were ready to up the learning! Grade 2s were ready to build their OWN number line, while grade 3s worked with me to create a number line to 1000! Grade 3s then were off and running, creating a number line to 1000 independently with a grade 3 buddy. Needless to say, it has also been a lesson in cooperation and teamwork!

Using their number lines, students were introduced to rounding to the nearest ten (everyone) and to the nearest hundred (grade 3s only) and found easy success with the visual help of the number line. Many students can now round various numbers without a visual aid.

Great job, Team 24! Another fun learning adventure!
