Money and Mummies

Happy Hawaiian Day! This morning we participated in four money centres: The Wacky Toy Store, bingo, Stamp It Out and a money word search. The Wacky Toy store was an activity in which each toy's price was calculated by adding the value of each letter in its name (similar to our activity from Wednesday). In Stamp It Out, students were given a value and used coin stamps to represent the value. The energy level was high as everyone was very engaged in each centre! Many were too excited to even sit in their chairs!

Sadly, we said good-bye to our amazing student teacher, Miss Warkentin! It has been so great to have her each Tuesday and Thursday morning. She easily built bonds and relationships with the students and she will be greatly missed! Best wishes in your future studies Miss Warkentin!!

After lunch, we took another look at mummies! We played BBC's Mummy Maker online game and were an assistant to the chief embalmer. We applied our understanding of the sequence of mummification and took a body through the embalming process. It was a fantastic interactive learning activity. Check it out at: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/ancient/egyptians/launch_gms_mummy_maker.shtml

We then watched a short video clip from the video Living History: Living in Ancient Egypt. Next we completed a SMARTboard activity in which we order the sequence of the embalming process. Lastly, we read a poem about mummies and brainstormed a list of words to put in a custom word search. TONS of fun!

Coming up Friday: Spelling Test, library and PJ day!

*Please remind students that they are to SAY and SORT their words at home. It is so important that they HEAR the sound pattern of the week, along with seeing the spelling pattern. During the spelling test, they need to be able to hear the sound pattern and apply the spelling pattern. They can then practice writing them.
