Entomologists at Work

Dear Team 24 Families,

Team 24 is full of budding entomologists! Students have been observing and caring for their Painted Lady Butterfly larvae and geez, they are growing quickly! Next week will be exciting as our larvae will most likely be ready for the next stage in their life cycle. STAY TUNED!

Previously, we have been observing the larvae with the lids off the vials using magnifying glasses. They were too delicate to handle so we learned to estimate their length with our rulers while they remained safely in their vials.

Friday was the first time we gently removed our larvae from their vials. We discussed how to carefully do this in order to be respectful to these amazing living creatures. Removing them with a large popsicle stick ensured we did not get the "school germs" from our hands onto our critters and prevented anyone from pinching or squishing them. Without carefully handling their larvae and keeping a close eye on them, students discussed how quickly the larvae could wander away and that that would be a cruel end to our larvae as they are not equipped to survive in our classroom.

Here are some pictures of the entomologists measuring and record the changes in their log books.
